Metalcore giants Of Mice & Men are back with their resilient first single “Earth & Sky” off of their upcoming sixth studio album, earthandsky, available September 27th via Rise Records.
“Earth & Sky” leads off triumphantly with a lone guitar, accompanied by a victorious drumbeat, and finally fills out with the full band. Once together, the intro chugs along for several measures before vocalist/bassist Aaron Pauley delivers a guttural growl that instantly launches the song forward into the first upbeat verse.
In the verses, we revisit the same notes and circular patterns of the introduction and hear them refreshingly stylized in a way that is technical and punchy, and surprisingly heavy. The choruses of “Earth & Sky” highlight Aaron Pauley’s clean vocals in melodies that are both catchy and defiant “I won’t run/I won’t turn away/I won’t let you get the best of me.” The body of the song follows a simple verse/chorus/verse/chorus pattern until the second chorus comes to an abrupt halt, tricking the listener into believing they’ve reached the end of the song. The listener is held in suspense until suddenly, haunting synth tones creep in. This synth builds up until once again we are greeted with the stylistic elements of the introduction, but this time we hear them evolve into a breakdown that wraps every element together beautifully while still leaving the listener hungry for the next piece.
“Earth & Sky” is Of Mice & Men’s victory march back to the top, once again earning them a spot as the kings of melodic metalcore.
earthandsky is currently available for preorder via Rise Records. OM&M will be heading out on a headlining North American with For The Fallen Dreams, Thousand Below, and Bloodbather this September. A second leg of dates in 2020 are said to be announced shortly.
