Have you ever wondered why you stopped finding new music? Finding a song that delivers a sound structure you haven’t heard three times this week is difficult nowadays. Just when I feel comfortable with my daily listening, a new challenger appears.

Take Today, a five-piece ensemble from Glasgow, makes good on a promise to breathe fresh air into your speakers. Their new single, “Lifeline”, encompasses everything I forgot I loved – driven drums pushing the song, a heavy rhythm with a melodic lead line, punchy and relatable lyrics, and a vocal style that reminds me of Jonny Craig, and at times, Jacoby Shaddix. Vocalist Paul Daly carries a union of even, well-controlled tone backed with grit and energy. The guitar riffs pulled me in from the second they started, and the tinge of accent in Daly’s singing helped lock the tune in my head long after the track finished. Nothing about this track feels mimicked or duplicated of other artists in the genre, but it is familiar enough that it has just the right level of nostalgia. Towards the middle-end, where I expected a break after the pulsing drum fill, I instead got a breakdown that took the song to new heights. The unclean vocals mesh fantastically with the tone Daly brings to the table, blending the definitive hard rock and alternative metal sounds into a track that I am confident will be used to break the dam for someone new to this kind of music. If you’re looking for a group that can put a new face on your favorite hard rock style, Take Today is your lifeline. Catch them on tour this year in the UK with Toreador this June.
